Health education plays a pivotal role in improving community well-being by promoting knowledge and healthy practices across all age groups, addressing a wide range of health issues from chronic diseases to mental health and influencing policy and economic outcomes.

When it comes to creating a thriving community, health education is an integral part. Community health workers collaborate with all stakeholders in a community — from its citizens to its government, education and medical officials — to improve health and wellness and ensure equal access to healthcare.

What Is Health Education?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health education is a tool to improve a population’s general health and wellness through promoting knowledge and healthy practices (WHO PDF source).

Although the subject is often taught in school settings, students aren’t the only ones who need to know about health. In fact, all age groups and demographics can benefit from health education.

What Is The Significance Of Health Education?

Community health education examines a population’s well-being, looking for problems and trends and working with partners to find solutions.

The importance of health education impacts many areas of wellness within a community, including:

Chronic disease awareness and prevention

Prevention of violence and injury

Maternal and infant health

Mental and behavioral health

Nutrition, exercise and obesity prevention

Tobacco use and substance abuse

Community health educators work with public health departments, schools, government offices and even local nonprofits to design educational programs and other resources to address a community’s specific needs.

“As public health professionals, with aid of community leaders, we strive to ensure community wellness as it pertains to health education,” said Dr. Tanyi Obenson, a public health clinical faculty member at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), who holds a PhD in Public Health. “A healthier community is a better community.”

How Does Health Education Impact A Community?

By addressing relevant local issues and concerns, health education can have an impact on communities, such as the following three:

1. Healthcare Disparities

Public health educators ensure that all members of a community have equal access to wellness resources and healthcare services, in addition to providing educational programming and resources to the community.

“When considering care access and delivery within communities, health equity and social justice are one in the same,” said Dr. Natalie Rahming, an adjunct healthcare faculty member at SNHU with almost two decades of experience working in the healthcare field. “The social determinants of health classify the various ways in which an individual’s identity characteristics and social positions are woven into a fabric of discrimination.”

According to Rahming, common health disparities include:

Gender health disparities

Racial or ethnic health disparities

Rural and urban health disparities

Socioeconomic health disparities

Rahming said racism and other disparities have manifested into unequal distribution of care across distinct groups over many generations.

“A community health worker seeks to abolish or ameliorate health inequity from a social lens, whereas other health care workers approach it at an individual perspective,” she said. “Both are critical for healthcare advancement.”

2. Community Health Education And Government Policy

The importance of health education also extends to policy and legislation development at local, state and national levels, informing and influencing key decisions that impact community health.
From campaigns and legislation to enforce seat belt use and prevent smoking to programs that boost the awareness and prevention of diabetes, public health workers provide research and guidance to inform policy development.

“In alignment to work on policy, community health leaders are needed to support the community with prevention strategies, interventions and programs designed to improve disparities of care based on social, economic, and environmental factors,” said Dr. Toni Clayton, executive director of health professions at SNHU. Clayton holds a PhD with a focus on healthcare and is also vice chairperson of the SNHU Online Institutional Review Board.

“The collaboration of community leaders is essential to form a shared commitment and results-oriented approach to improving the health of our most vulnerable populations,” she said.

3. The Economic Importance Of Health Education

Health education can also boost a community’s economy by reducing healthcare spending and lost productivity due to preventable illness.

Obesity and tobacco use, for example, cost the United States billions of dollars each year in healthcare costs and lost productivity.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), obesity costs the U.S. healthcare system almost $173 billion a year. And the total economic cost of tobacco use costs the United States more than $600 billion in direct health care costs and lost productivity every year, according to a 2025 American Lung Association report.
Programs designed to help community members combat expensive health issues boost individuals’ health and provide a strong return on investment for communities.

According to the CDC, states with strong tobacco control programs see a $55 return on every $1 investment, mostly from avoiding costs to treat smoking-related illnesses. The national cost of offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program is about $500 per participant, significantly lower than the $9,600 spent on diabetes care per type 2 diabetes patient yearly.

How To Become A Community Healthcare Worker

A community healthcare worker’s goal is to help others, starting with education.

A high school diploma or an associate’s degree is typically required to begin a career in community healthcare. The work done within public health and community healthcare differs from other healthcare fields and impacts communities in different ways, requiring different training and understanding of healthcare.

“Unlike individual healthcare delivery, public health investigates the systems and trends that impact behaviors and outcomes within a community collectively,” said Rahming. “The identification of needs and the provision of tools to promote disease prevention, individual empowerment, and improved wellness that enhances the quality of life for all are facilitated by this research,” the authors write.

Earning your bachelor’s degree in public health or community health could help you advance your career and better understand your work. On top of your classroom education, many community health care workers are required to complete on-the-job training. According to BLS, training often covers communication, outreach and information based on your specific community health focus.

Public Health Education: A Growing Field

As the health, social and economic impacts of community health education continue to grow, so does the field of public health and health promotion.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the role of health education specialist is projected to grow by 7% through 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. * BLS states that health education specialists usually need a bachelor’s degree but that some health education specialist jobs require you to have a master’s degree, too.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree could be a proactive way to learn more and get ready for a career in public health education. Whether you want to be a health education specialist or an epidemiologist, there are a variety of things you can do with your MPH. By adding a concentration to your degree, you can also focus your MPH studies on specific areas, such as global health. When considering MPH programs, look for one accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), such as SNHU’s. CEPH is an independent agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and their accreditation means that the program has met the standards.

You can learn the skills you need to lead efforts to prevent illness and disease, build community wellness programs, and advocate for public health policy in an accredited MPH program. Whether you decide to pursue an MPH or community health education degree, the public health education field has a wide variety of settings where you may work.

These settings, according to the BLS, include:

Government organizations and public health departments

Hospitals and healthcare facilities

Nonprofit organizations

Private businesses and employee wellness programs

Schools and colleges

According to SNHU adjunct faculty member Michelle Gifford, the field of community health education will also continue to expand as communities continue to place a greater emphasis on enhancing their citizens’ health and wellness.

“I believe that more and more communities are seeing benefits from wellness-related initiatives and receiving positive marks about them,” Gifford said. “Hence, community leaders are seeing this as not just a business-driven necessity, but also something that impacts the well-being and quality of life of their citizens.”

Because that is the world I am currently living in, I am taking a brief break from posting about art today to talk about things related to new mothers. When we found out last year we were expecting a baby, we were over the moon. I started making a baby shopping list early on and quickly became overwhelmed by all the things new moms could buy. As a minimalist, I wanted a short, simple list containing only the basics. I couldn’t find a list like this anywhere. As a result, I ended up buying a lot of things we didn’t need and missing some we did. That’s why, today, I’m sharing all the items we needed in hopes that I make someone else’s baby buying experience easier.

Carseat And Stroller

Because you and your baby need only a carseat to leave the hospital, this item is not optional. To keep things simple, I wanted a carseat that fit into a stroller, but also a stroller our baby could grow into. Until I saw this system at a Buy Buy Baby closing sale, I had my heart set on a jogging stroller for our long walks. I’ve never experienced a lighter, more sleek stroller. I can walk miles with it because it feels like I’m barely pushing anything. Also, it folds up really small in the car trunk. This stroller is great for anyone who has to go up stairs with a baby. Also excellent if you simply do not require anything bulky.

Bassinet Snoo

This was a last minute purchase. I received several recommendations for this bassinet. However, I was hesitant to buy because the price is ridiculous. I ordered this item late, so we received it several days after we brought our son home from the hospital. Buying the Snoo on Black Friday for $1100, as we did, is a good idea. The resale value for the Snoo is great, so you can always get your money back later.

Changing Peanut

I actually bought two changing tables. A cloth cover was used to cushion one for our baby’s nursery. I bought this Keekaroo for our first floor. I haven’t used the cushioned one at all. Having a changing table you can wipe down makes too much sense. I love this changing pad so much I don’t ever see us using the other one.

Bouncy Seat

I bought a swing too, as well as some other things to help us go hands-free with baby. This is the only way we can go hands-free and keep our son happy. We put him in it all the time. Additionally, I adore how simple it is to move this item from room to room. We take it all over the house.

Carrier

We had both the Baby Bjorn Mini and I borrowed the Solly (a traditional wrap carrier) from my sister-in-law. The wrap was great in the beginning and the mini was great when since it fits babies of all sizes (including newborns) and is super supportive with padded straps and a hip belt. Our infant also enjoys it.

Blankets

To keep our baby warm and prevent the spread of germs, blankets are ideal for covering the car seat. We even use them for diaper changes or cleaning up spitup. We got lots of these as gifts but I think moms only need a few – maybe 1 heavier one and 1-2 lighter ones.

0-3 Month Onesies

When I went shopping for clothes, I thought dresses were best. They’re most convenient for changing diapers right? I was unaware that gowns are incompatible with carriers, swings, and carseats. We ended up using zipper onesies instead of the gowns I bought, which we barely used. We tried Gerber, Kyte and Old Navy.

Portable Sound Machine

You might not think that this is necessary, but it is for us! We bring this sound machine everywhere. I even hook it on myself when I have our baby in the carrier and want him to sleep. It instantly sooths him.

Huggies Diapers (+ Unscented Wipes)

We tried all the major diaper brands – Pampers, Honest, Target brand – the list goes on. In my opinion, Huggies are superior. They fit our baby best and were great at catching messy diapers. Kirkland brand was our second favorite. I would assume you’re going to go through at least 8-10 diapers per day in the beginning. We usually change his diaper with every feeding.

Drops Of Saline For Infants

I was told by the doctor not to suction baby boogers unless absolutely necessary. I guess suctioning makes babies produce more congestion. Moreover, the hospital is probably going to give you a snot sucker. Instead, they advised using saline drops, and the congestion would disappear on its own. Our baby goes through periods were his nose is really stuffy, and these drops work great.

Baby Aquaphor

We use this for everything – cradle cap, scratches, his lips, you name it. Fun fact, you can also use this on diaper rash which eliminates the need for diaper rash cream.

Diaper Pail

The two options for dirty diapers are to either to throw them in a garage/outdoor garbage can or to get an air tight diaper pail. The second option is more convenient. We tried another brand that didn’t hold odors very well, then ended up upgrading to this one. It works great!

Temperature Monitors For The Room

We live in an older house where the temperature is inconsistent in every room. As a couple who used to sleep with the windows cracked in winter and the air blazing in the summer, we had no concept of what temps were good for baby. It appears that 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature for infants. We keep one of these in the family room and one in our room to check the temperature frequenting.

Cotton Burp Rags

Really, you can just use a wash cloth or tissue to clean up messes. You don’t need rags specific for baby use. We have these and always throw one in the carseat and diaper bag just in case.

Diaper Bag

What no one told me is that you don’t really need a diaper bag. And large backpack or purse will do as long as you buy something to change baby on. What’s nice is that ours clips onto the stroller and has a waterproof pocket for bottles. However, I would never label this as a necessity.

Wipe Warmer

In the beginning, our baby would freak out when we changed his diaper. After that, we started using a wipe warmer, and in a flash, our panic attacks stopped. I used to think these were too many, but it was so important to us that I thought it was important to mention.

Hand Sanitizer

Our pediatrician uses this “clean for babies” brand and we love it. We have the bigger bottles all over the house, and I keep the little bottles in our car and diaper bag.

Seasonal Gear

We realized quickly that we could use a snowsuit for our Christmas baby. We were able to get by for a while without one, wrapping him up in blankets and hats. Nevertheless, it was a useful item. We have one from Baby Gap. Also warm weather hats were essential. I like these. Other seasonal items for summer babies could be sunblock and a sunhat.

Unnecessary Items

Swaddles

I bought two Ollie Swaddles, but I didn’t know that if you have the Snoo sleep sacks, you don’t need these. Maybe we will use them later. However, I have yet to get them out of their box. I have some other sleep sacks we never got out as well.

Baby Towel

Although these are adorable, you can easily use any towel.

Diaper Cream

I found Baby Aquaphor works better.

Baby Hair Brush

Our baby does not have much hair, so this item was totally unnecessary for us. Plus. I could just use our combs on him.

Topponcino

I read about this item in a Montessori book and I was sold. You’re supposed to keep your baby in it when you hold them and it mimics the womb. However, in those first few months you are in survival mode. I kept forgetting to grab this item and put him in it. It was good in theory, but unnecessary in reality.

We’ve Tested Gear From Chicco, UPPAbaby, Tommee Tippee, BabyBjorn, And More To Find The Best Baby Gear On The Planet

Despite their diminutive size, infants have larger and more complex needs. In the first few days coming home, you might be able to get by with a handful of items, but as the days progress, you’ll need the top baby gear to take care of your little one with ease.

That’s where BabyGearLab steps in.

We’ve comprehensively tested more baby products than anyone. A list of everything you need to get through the first year of your baby’s life has been compiled by our baby experts. We’ve included quality vetted baby gear through our extensive testing process in our in-house lab and in the real world. We regularly update this gear list to include the latest and greatest once they’ve passed our tests for award-winning status.

Here is our baby gear list, including all the favorites we’d recommend to a friend getting ready to launch into the wonderful world of parenthood.

The Basic Diaper Goods

The world has a lot of baby items. Some products are helpful must-haves, and others are nice-to-have items that could make life easier or more fun. This collection is the necessities of infant diapering care because no matter what kind of parent you plan to be or what gear you hope to buy, every baby will need quality diaper goods.

Diaper For Disposal

Green and conventional options are included in our evaluation of disposable diapers. From biodegradable choices to super absorbers, there is likely a diaper that can meet your needs, even if you only need disposable options for travel or daycare.

Cloth Diapers

Top-ranked cloth diapers are reusable options that require regular cleaning but could save you money in the long run. Many new styles of cloth options are easy to use and clean with disposal liners and other features.

Cloth Baby Wipes

Some parents use cloth baby wipes to produce less waste. Not all cloth wipes are created equal, and choosing the right one can help you avoid messy mistakes.

Disposable Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are disposable and convenient, allowing you to avoid carrying around soiled items in your diaper bag. We’ve tested various options, including those with the fewest chemicals and additives we could find.

Diaper Rash Cream

Most babies need diaper rash cream at some point during diaper-hood. Whether it is a slight irritation or serious fire tushie, diaper rash creams can help create a moisture barrier and help skin heal.

Diaper Bag

A great diaper bag can pull together all your supplies for adventures away from home. Keeping a diaper bag well-stocked and well-organized means always being prepared. It can be thought of as a bug-out bag for the bottom of your baby.

Toilet Chair

Once your little one is ready to ditch the diapers, you’ll want a great potty chair to start potty training. A suitable chair can encourage and help little ones on their journey to great toilet training.

Nursing

It is entirely up to you what you feed your baby and how. No matter which path you follow (because, honestly, sometimes you don’t get to choose), you’ll need some baby gear to help you get there.

Nursing Pillow

Most of us moms cringe when we think back to middle school. Somehow we got through it (thank goodness, right?) However, when our boys are in the midst of these trying years, it is harder to determine what they require. It can be challenging for us as their mothers to find common ground and connection as they mature into young men with their gangly bodies, crackling voices, and strong emotions. What your son requires during the difficult and perplexing years of middle school.

He Needs You To Back Off

He may remind you daily that “I’m not a little kid anymore, mom!” and it’s true. He is maturing. Middle school is the perfect time to give him more autonomy over his life. It is up to you to decide where to give them this independence, but they must take responsibility for some of their choices. Around the 8th grade, we also stopped pestering each other about homework and making daily grade checks. At the beginning of the school year,

Did this make you feel like you were handing over their academic success to the worst babysitter ever? Yes. But it helped them learn how to make mistakes in a safe and supportive environment and learn how to advocate for themselves at school and at home before they entered high school.

He Needs You To Be Patient With His Brain Development

Middle school boys are not great at making decisions, whether it’s about food, clothes, relationships, homework, or sleep.

Is your son making questionable decisions and being pretty irresponsible about chores, screen time, and homework? He’s completely on track developmentally.

Middle school is such an awkward time to be a boy. We often think of body image issues as a “girl problem,” but how a person feels about their body affects both genders, especially in middle school.

Boys may experience feelings of extreme self-doubt regarding their weight, whether they believe they are excessively thin, overweight, or lack muscle mass in any way. Our sons need us, as their parents, to be sensitive to their growing bodies, listen closely, advocate for their health and self-esteem with pediatricians, therapists and coaches, and assure them that they will get through puberty, even if it feels agonizing at the time.

He Needs To Hear From You About The Big Issues

Middle school can feel like the wild west of social issues and you are never sure what your son is going to come home and talk to you about—fist fights in the hallway, school shootings on the news, who came out as gay, bi-sexual, or furry—it’s enough to make your head spin.

Teen suicide is a heavy issue, and this horrible loss was as foreign to me as it was to them, but as their parent, I knew that I needed to talk to them about the big issues and help them walk this new and difficult path, even if I had never walked this path before myself.

He Needs You To Be His Advocate

As much as our sons need space and more independence as they navigate the middle school years, they still need us to have their backs when they face adversity. We shouldn’t solve all their problems, but we need to guide them along the way–and step in when needed.

I had no idea what would happen if I involved the principal, but I when my son looked back at this challenging time in his life, I wanted him to remember that he wasn’t alone. His parents had his back, no matter what.

He Needs You To Keep The Big Picture In Mind

For some boys, the middle school years can be a nightmare, both at school and at home.

Attitudes, fights with parents, pushing boundaries, slacking on chores and homework, not wanting to be with family, issues with siblings, and raging hormones can make you want to scream as a mom of a young teen.

Keep loving him well and know that the struggles you’re having today will disappear in 6 months, a year (or maybe five!). These challenging times will not last forever.

He Needs You To Be A Soft Place To Land

Middle school boys can be stinkers—literally and figuratively (pro tip: keep an Old Spice in your purse and pass it to your son in the car when he tells you—again—that he forgot to put on deodorant.) But your son needs you to be a soft place to land, a safe space he can always come to no matter what.

You are still home. You are the warm dinner, the after-school snack, the Mcdonald’s run after practice, the one who fills him up when he’s.

Keep reminding him. He may be unpleasant, but he is also unpleasant for you—don’t let him forget that! He needs you to know that he’s still your little boy.

Do you know what’s great about middle school boys? Even if he’s a head taller than you and he sounds like his dad on the phone, he’s still your little boy.

When he’s at his band concert, his face will still light up when he sees you waving like a maniac from the crowd. He will probably even wave back.

You Know Why? You’re His Mom.

And even during these tough middle school years, when he’s growing up, venturing out, wearing you out, testing the limits, holding everything in, being moody as hell, and wearing the same clothes for two weeks in a row, he’s still your little boy.

What your son needs during these tough and confusing middle school years.

He Needs You To Back Off

He may remind you daily that “I’m not a little kid anymore, mom!” and it’s true. He’s growing up. Middle school is the perfect time to give him more autonomy over his life. Where you decide to give this independence is up to you, but they need to become responsible for some of their decisions.

Eight Simple Things Middle School Boys Need To Survive This Crazy Time

As moms, most of us think back to our middle school years with a cringe. Somehow we got through it (thank goodness, right?) But it’s harder to know what our boys need as they are in the middle of these tough years.

As much as I wanted to give up most days during middle school with my twin boys (or ship them off to boarding school), I realized that my sons still needed me as their mom—a lot.

What your son needs during these tough and confusing middle school years.

Did this feel like putting their academic success into the hands of the worst babysitter ever?

Middle school boys are immature, silly, emotional, goofy, forgetful, sweet, infuriating, argumentative, and self-centered.

Everything is normal. Be patient as he grows; guide him with patience; repeat yourself with kindness approximately 1,345 times; and remember that self-awareness and responsibility take time to develop.

He wants you to understand that body image and sensitivity aren’t just problems for girls. Being a boy in middle school is such an awkward time. We often think of body image issues as a “girl problem,” but how a person feels about their body affects both genders, especially in middle school. Our sons need us, as their parents, to be sensitive to their growing bodies, listen closely, advocate for their health and self-esteem with pediatricians, therapists and coaches, and assure them that they will get through puberty, even if it feels agonizing at the time.

Gender inequality is within the air, and we breathe it in every day thru books and tv classified ads that depict these gender norms. At a completely early age, children who’re the spine of society, are uncovered to gender expectations and stereotypes that they internalize. We want to inspire children and support them as individuals as opposed to emphasizing gender variations.

Gender Inequality Sprouts At Domestic

It is an apt pronouncing that ‘domestic is where the coronary heart is’, however it is also the primary vicinity in which the gender gap starts. From birth, a baby’s gender shapes how she or he should behave or how they must be handled in keeping with existing gender stereo-kinds in society. Even their toys and shades are differentiated. So, boys are given balls, Lego sets, rockets, and kites, even as its dolls and kitchen sets for ladies. Films on outer area are alleged to be a boy’s domain whilst girls are endorsed to watch Barbie. Pink is the desired shade for women even as for boys its blue! However why can’t a boy put on a crimson blouse in a flowered pattern?

Boys Don’t Cry

In some conventional societies it is even laid down that females must be submissive and dependent even as adult males are speculated to be shielding and stoic. Boys are told ‘don’t cry like a lady.’ however, a boy, if harm or upset, has as an awful lot proper as a woman to cry, simply as a lady can vent anger via shouting. In extraordinarily conventional families, boys are even considered more precious and worthy of funding and higher research at the same time as it’s miles believed that it’s higher for ladies to discover ways to cope with a family. Even the chores set for youngsters at home replicate gender variations.

Sports Activities Are For Boys

Boys are entrusted with upkeep chores like watering the lawn or portray the fence. Then again, women need to lay the desk or dust the furnishings. Boys play sports, rough play and soak up outdoor activities. While women are greater sensitive. They play indoor board games like Ludo and Carrom. Those perception structures prioritize existence choices in childhood itself.

Gender Inequality Should Be Shattered At Home

A long time three to six are very essential for a child for it is then that they analyze lifetime classes of gender sensitization; and until handled with care, they might choose up poor attitudes and pressure problems.

Movies And Tales

What could we as dad and mom and educators, do to defend our children from the ever-gift gender bias? We are able to undertaking gender discriminations thru the tales we study and the movies our children watch. Traditional damsel-in-misery tales or the ones offering princesses rescued dramatically by using a charming prince, inclusive of Snow White and Cinderella do not mirror right gender roles. Alternatively, ‘Frozen’ and ‘Dora the explorer’ are tremendous films for younger ones due to the fact they show strong girl lead characters.

Inform the children tales celebrating youngsters in all their variety, cultural variations and make sure to include kids with disabilities. Exchange traditional children’s rhymes, songs and finger play including both genders in every hobby by using switching names or sports. In ‘Mary had a bit lamb’ occasionally update Mary with Rahul. In ‘Wheels of the Bus,’ use ‘dad and mom’ in place of ‘mommies’, emphasizing that the father has an equally crucial position in citing youngsters.

Inclusive Language

Look for video games growing innovative competencies, and problem-fixing sports in regular lifestyles. Keep away from segregating boys and girls in separate lines. Rather divide them in keeping with age, peak, or alphabetical order.

The equal applies to seating preparations in elegance. Try all inclusive names like ‘children’ as opposed to ‘boys’ and ‘girls.’ Do now not inform a infant woman that she seems pretty or a infant boy that he looks smart. As a substitute, cognizance on their achievements and abilties. In performs and skits, attempt to depict boys and ladies inside the same roles. At the same time as dramatizing Ramayana, don’t specify that simplest girls can play Sita or boys Ram and Ravan. Every person must be able to act whichever position they need and both sexes must portray the main characters.

Profession Alternatives

Our expectancies of what boys can do, and what ladies can choose to do when they determine their careers, have notably changed.
